UK pub closures hit their highest level since July 2024, with 67 pubs declaring insolvency in April following increases to National Insurance Contributions and the minimum wage. Accountancy firm Price Bailey attributes the spike to April's policy changes, which raised employer NICs to 15% and increased wage rates by up to 16.3%. Many pubs, already financially strained, were unable to absorb the added costs and are now cutting opening hours or facing insolvency.

A University of Oxford study has found that many UK Uber drivers are earning significantly less per hour following the 2023 rollout of a dynamic pricing algorithm. Uber’s cut of fares—its “take rate”—has risen from 25% to a median of 29%, reaching over 50% in some cases, while driver earnings have stagnated or fallen in real terms.

A clerical error in Wayne County’s payroll system led to a $1.6 million overpayment to a longtime employee, sparking a scandal that resulted in multiple staff dismissals. The mistake occurred when a supervisor accidentally entered the worker’s ID number as an hourly rate, and the error bypassed several internal checks. Although the employee reported the issue and returned the funds, two staff members were fired and one suspended.

Over 518 UK employers have been ordered to repay more than £7.4 million to nearly 60,000 workers who were underpaid the National Living or Minimum Wage, the government announced. The repayments follow HMRC investigations between 2015 and 2022, with offending businesses also facing penalties of up to 200% of the underpaid amounts.

On 18 June 2025, Estonia’s parliament approved a law replacing the temporary 2% security tax with permanent tax hikes. From 1 January 2026, income and corporate tax rates will rise from 22% to 24%, and the simplified business tax rate will increase from 20% to 22%. The VAT rate will be permanently raised to 24% starting 1 July 2025.

On 13 May 2025, Saskatchewan’s Bill No. 5 received royal assent, paving the way for significant amendments to the Saskatchewan Employment Act (SEA), expected to take effect later this year. Once in force, the amendments will restrict when employers can request sick notes, extend various employment leaves, and introduce new rules around tips and gratuities. The bill also allows employers more flexibility in defining a workday for overtime purposes.

Brazil issued Provisional Measure No. 1.303 on 11 June 2025, raising taxes on financial institutions, investments, and virtual assets. Key changes include higher taxes on interest on net equity (from 15% to 20%) and increased CSLL rates for financial institutions (up to 15% or 20%). A flat 17.5% tax will apply to individual income from investments, crypto, and stock gains starting in 2026.

Effective 1 July 2025, New Zealand reduces the annual government KiwiSaver contribution from NZD 521.43 to NZD 260.72. In addition, individuals earning over NZD 180,000 annually will no longer be eligible for any government contribution. The current contribution rate remains in place for the year ending 30 June 2025, with payments to be made in July and August at the existing rate.

Starting 1 July 2025, Victoria will increase the payroll tax-free threshold from $900,000 to $1 million, benefiting around 28,000 businesses with lower tax bills and exempting an additional 6,000 businesses from payroll tax altogether. Eligible businesses could save up to $14,500 each. The government views this as an investment in jobs and economic growth despite budget adjustments.

6 July 2025: Deadline to submit P11D and P11D(b) forms to HMRC for the 2024/25 tax year. These forms report expenses and benefits provided to employees and the associated Class 1A NIC liability.
22 July 2025: Deadline for payment of Class 1A National Insurance Contributions on employee benefits reported via P11D for the 2024/25 tax year. This payment covers employer NIC on taxable benefits provided to employees.
